Homewood trustees to hear results of parking study

Two construction projects that could begin later this year will have a big impact on parking in downtown Homewood. The village hired the firm Kenig, Lindgren, O’Hara, Aboona Inc. to study how the village can compensate for the disruption.

Eric Russell with KLOA is expected to present the firm’s findings at the Homewood Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, May 14.

Parking spaces will be permanently lost when townhomes are built on most of the current village hall parking lot, and there will be temporary loss of parking when the Triumph Buildling is demolished and a new structure built at the corner of Ridge Road and Martin Avenue.

The sale of the Triumph Building is also on the agenda. The village purchased the building last year with the intent of conveying it to a developer. The sale of the building will enable the development of a four-story building with retail, hotel and residential units.

Newly elected trustees will be sworn in, and several staff changes at the Police Department will also be made official at the meeting.

Roy Janich will be honored as he retires after a three-decade career with the department. Det. Tom Johnson will be sworn in as a sergeant, and new officer Justin Blackburn will take the oath of office.

In other business, trustees will:

  • Hear a proclamation of National Public Works Week honoring local public works staff who maintain the village’s infrastructure. The Public Works Department will hold an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, to offer residents a chance to learn more about their public works operations.
  • Consider a resolution to appropriate $20,000 of Motor Fuel Tax funds for street milling and surface mix.
  • Consider an agreement to provide payroll and human resource services to the Homewood Science Center.
  • Accept the annual report from the Fire and Police Commission.
  • Consider a renewal of a permit for outdoor liquor sales for Calumet Country Club.
  • Consider an automatic aid agreement between fire departments in 20 villages, including Homewood, that are part of the MABAS 24 mutual aid system.
  • Consider awarding two bids for tree service, including trimming and removal, not to exceed $213,000.
The board will meet at 7 p.m. in village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.
