Area facing major depletion of maple trees over next several years

The plan for Homewood-Flossmoor Park District's A Seat at the Table community picnic on Sunday was thwarted by rain, but the event was not.Park district officials had intended to hold the bring-your-own food and drink event on the greensward of Irwin Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Long rows of picnic tables were set up with table cloths and flower center pieces Sunday afternoon, in the hopes an improving forecast would prove true.But shortly after 5:30 p.m. it began to rain steadily, and with the event about to start, park district . . .

Saturday, July 2

  • Roots + Fire Water grand opening, 11 a.m. at 1941 Ridge Road in Homewood.

Monday, July 4

  • Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department kids parade, starting at 10 a.m. at Parker Junior High, ending in downtown Flossmoor.
  • Homewood 4th of July parade, staring at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, south to Ridge Road, then east to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, where there will be a community picnic.
