Deadline nears for Flossmoor residential rain barrel program

Flossmoor residents can order free rain barrels by signing up for a village program through Friday, Oct. 28.

The rain barrels are being offered through a partnership with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation Districts (MWRD). Residents who sign up this week will have the rain barrels delivered to their homes free of charge.

Laura Brennan-Levy, Flossmoor’s event and program coordinator, said more than 100 residents have already signed up for rain barrels. Residents can order up to four rain barrels.

A rain barrel is a water tank used to collect and store rainwater at the end of downspout. Collected rainwater can then be used to water plants, wash cars and reduce residential water bills. Rain barrels are seen as a simple, efficient, low-cost method for homeowners to collect and recycle water.

Residents are responsible for the installation and maintenance of rain barrels. The village will submit orders to the MWRD, which will deliver the rain barrels in about 12 weeks.

To sign up for a rain barrel, Flossmoor residents can download a form on the village website, www.flossmoor.org. Forms need to be returned to the village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road. The village can only take orders from Flossmoor residents and the form must be signed by the homeowner.
