Homewood amends code to match state cannabis law

The Homewood village board has amended the municipal code to regulate recreational cannabis sales and clearly define what types of paraphernalia are prohibited.

The Homewood village board amended the municipal code to regulate recreational cannabis sales.

Governor J.B. Pritzker in June signed into law a bill legalizing recreational cannabis sales to adults over 21. That becomes effective on Jan. 1, 2020.

The amendments approved by the board at the Nov. 12 meeting more clearly define what types of paraphernalia are prohibited. Equipment, products and materials used for growing or manufacturing cannabis and other controlled substances remain illegal.

Devices used for smoking or ingesting marijuana, like pipes, bongs and equipment used to separate sticks and seeds from marijuana, are no longer prohibited.

Possession of cannabis is limited to less than 30 grams of cannabis flower, 500 milligrams of THC contained in a cannabis-infused product or five grams of cannabis concentrate.

The changes also allow police to impound the vehicle of anyone “soliciting, possessing, or attempting to solicit or possess cannabis or a controlled substance in violation of” the new law.

Fines for violating any of these laws can range from $100 to $750.

Windy City Cannabis will apply for a license to sell recreational marijuana at its location at 1137 175th St. in Homewood, CEO Steve Weisman told The Chronicle. Those applications are due to the state next month.

Windy City opened in 2016 as a dispensary for medicinal marijuana.

The Flossmoor plan commission will host a public hearing to discuss recreational marijuana sales in the village on Nov. 21. Medical cannabis sales are legal in Flossmoor, though none currently exist.
