Science Center gets spacey with 2nd Cocktail Chemistry contest

Local bartenders have been challenged to create a drink that’s out of this world. The Homewood Science Center’s second annual Cocktail Chemistry Challenge on July 18 will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969.

The Homewood Science Center’s second annual Cocktail Chemistry Challenge on July 18 will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969.

Holly Kelsven, science center events and marketing coordinator, said the ingredients would reflect the moon landing theme, but not in the way some might expect.

“We could have gone cheesy and done something like pop rocks and tang, but we wanted to give the bars something special to work with,” she said.

In keeping with the nature of the event, they called for two ingredients used in the first cocktail that astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong drank when they came back to earth. The Moon Walk cocktail included champagne, grapefruit, orange liqueur and rosewater.

Kelsven said bartenders making the Homewood version of The Moon Walk will need to use rosewater, citrus and CO2 (carbon dioxide).

Science center staff and volunteers revealed the ingredient requirements for this year’s contest entries at the Artisan Street Fair on Saturday, June 8, in downtown Homewood.

“There has to be a science, technology, engineering, art or math (STEAM) component to their cocktail,” Kelsven said. “We will find the science behind cocktails at this event.”

The contest is patterned after the “Iron Chef” television shows, which were timed competitions between chefs who had to use specified ingredients.

Competitors this year will represent Lassen’s Bar & Grill, last year’s winner; The Cottage on Dixie, Copper Still, La Voute Bar + Bistro and The Well at The Distillery.

The competition will take place on Thursday, July 18, at Ravisloe Country Club, 18231 Park Ave. in Homewood. Tickets are $60 prior to July 10 and $75 after that date. Tickets can be purchased online.

Sponsors for the event include Tito’s Handmade Vodka, The Weglarz Company, Homewood Florist and Aurelio’s Pizza.
