Starting Wednesday, Jan. 1, Windy City Cannabis in Homewood will welcome adult-use cannabis customers. The state’s new law allowing recreational use of cannabis will go into effect on New Year’s Day.

Windy City opened at a 1137 175th St. in January 2016  as a medical cannabis dispensary.

Founder and owner Steve Weisman said the dispensary is ready to expand into the new type of sales.

“We will have plenty of knowledgeable employees onsite to help our guests check in, to answer questions in the waiting areas, and during the in-dispensary experience,” Weisman said. “We know visiting a dispensary can be intimidating, so our staff is prepared and ready to assist every step of the way.”

The dispensary will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 1.

“Customers can check out the FAQ on our website to help plan their visit. As a thank you to customers, we will have food and beverage from local community partners, cannabis trivia with prizes, and more throughout the day to turn the wait time into a celebration,” Weisman said.

He offered some tips for customers.

  • Plan on about 30 to 45 minutes for a visit, but note that wait times during the first few weeks of adult-use sales will likely be longer than normal.
  • Bring cash. WCC has an ATM at each of its locations, but coming prepared with cash may be advisable.
  • Bring a valid photo ID with proof of age and address, such as a driver’s license, state-issued ID, or military ID.
  • Leave plenty of time for parking. Please be respectful of WCC neighbors and only park in designated areas or, ideally, use public transportation — parking is limited and it is anticipated Jan. 1 to be very busy day for sales.
Customers who want to information about product availability, hours and events can follow WCC on Instagram, @illinoisdispensaries, or on Twitter, @ILDispensaries. The company also has a frequently asked questions page on its website.
