New signs remind drivers to stop — and save

The village of Homewood has a deal for motorists who travel through three intersections in town. Heed a sign and save money.

Last week the village installed five signs that read, "Complete Stop FREE/Rolling Stop $164.00/Your Choice."

Anyone who stops long enough to read the sign probably has complied with the requirements of the stop sign just above it.

Mayor Richard Hofeld said the intersections with the new signs were places where motorists frequently fail to come to a complete stop, and village officials were concerned about public safety at those locations.

According to Police Chief Bill Alcott, the $164 amount is typically the minimum cost incurred for a stop sign violation.

The new signs are at the intersection of Park Avenue and Ridge Road for traffic in both directions, at 187th Street and Center Avenue for traffic going east and west and at Harwood Avenue and Ridge Road for traffic going north.

The signs come several years after the addition of electric speed signs posted at four locations, one near Churchill School, one near Willow School and two on 183rd Street near James Hart School. Those signs display the speed of approaching vehicles and flash when a vehicle is going over the speed limit.
