Homewood police provide explanation of alleged bullying incident

Homewood police issued a statement Wednesday afternoon providing an explanation about an encounter between a father and a group of teens Tuesday.

The encounter occurred about 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, after an apparent conflict between a youth and a group of teens at Irwin Park.

According to a story by CBS Channel 2 in Chicago, the youth contacted his father and reported he was being chased by the group of teens.

The father responded to the scene and confronted the group.

Homewood police were contacted by an anonymous caller and also responded to the area to investigate the report of a possible fight.

"The anonymous caller stated that there were several people gathered and believed that they were going to start to fight," police said in the statement.

Officers found the group at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Olive Road. They interviewed the father, his son, independent witnesses and the group of teenagers.

"As with all incidents, this has been fully investigated by the Homewood Police Department," according to the statement. "With information obtained from all parties, as well as video footage from both body and in-car cameras, it was determined that no law had been violated."

On Tuesday, after the investigation was completed, the police spoke with the mother of the youth who had been chased and advised her on the findings of the investigation.

In the CSB story, the parents, who are African American, said they believe Homewood police treated the father as if he was a suspect and felt he was treated differently than the teens, who were white.
