H-F hosts Advanced Academics Showcase Jan. 18

Current and future students of Homewood-Flossmoor High School and their parents are invited to attend H-F’s annual Advanced Academics Showcase from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18. The evening’s program will begin in the Mall Auditorium.

The event is designed to have participants explore the school’s wide array of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Project Lead the Way and Media, Visual and Performing (MVP) Fine Arts Academy courses.

Participants will have the opportunity to talk to H-F department chairs and teachers about their classes’ content and expectations. Additionally, participants will get information from current H-F students about their advanced coursework experiences, and they will learn about the college-admissions process from representatives from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, DePauw University and Lawrence Technical University.

According to Nancy Spaniak, H-F’s director of curriculum, instruction and professional development, the Advanced Academics Showcase will help students:
•   Discover how advanced courses can fuel their curiosity, stoke their interests and develop their talents.
•   Learn how taking challenging courses can make them better students and more well-rounded individuals.
•   Hear about the college-level study skills developed by taking advanced classes.
•   Understand that taking challenging coursework can expand their outlook and actually make them smarter.
•   Explore advanced course options that can help them determine what they will study in college.
