Artist is speaker at ceremony for Flossmoor Sculpture Garden work

Flossmoor’s newest addition to its Sculpture Garden, Crossing #5, will be dedicated on June 3 at Flossmoor Park, 2423 Flossmoor Road.

Sculptor Ed McCullough of Chicago will speak at 2 p.m. and is bringing four models of his work to the dedication ceremony. Activities are planned at the park between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Local artists will be selling their work, many of them 3D objects, before and after McCullough’s remarks.

McCullough said he worked on his Crossing series in the mid-1980s.

“I was at a point, or a crossing, in my career when I realized ‘I am where I want to be,’” he said, adding he created Crossing #5 for his friend Les Seggebruch, of Cissna Park, Ill., who still owns the piece.

“Les had seen other sculptures in the Crossing series and said ‘I want that!’” McCullough said, adding that Seggebruch has agreed to lend his beloved sculpture to Flossmoor to be on exhibit for three years.

McCullough, now 82, and his friend are personally installing the statue in Flossmoor Park.

Crossing #5 will be the fourth piece of art on loan in Flossmoor’s Sculpture Garden, located in and around the village’s downtown area. Flossmoor also owns eight sculptures. The sculptures are overseen and maintained by the village’s Public Art Commission. No tax money is used for any Sculpture Garden expenses.

Commission chairman Richard Bumstead said he is excited about the new sculpture.

“Commissioner Charlene Gordon has known the sculptor for years and the entire Public Art Commission is happy to finally bring one of his pieces to Flossmoor,” Bumstead said. “The steel sculpture is unique for the program in that it is rather low in profile while most others have been more upright. Finding the right location in the village was a challenge so that it could be easily seen and experienced.”

Bumstead said Governors State University students will have art for sale on June 3 and some members of the Village Artists, now headquartered in Homewood, will set up tables for their work.
