Home rule ordinances top the Homewood trustees agenda Tuesday

Trustees will consider five ordinances that, if adopted, would:
  • Place the question before voters in the March 20 consolidated election whether to grant the village home rule authority
  • Place limits on some of the authorities granted by home rule status, including the promise to abide by non-home rule property tax caps for the general fund levy; to hold a public hearing about any proposed tax or fee hikes; to require a two-thirds majority to pass new tax or tax increase measures; and to abide by the non-home rule limit on the amount of debt the village can incur
  • Consider an intergovernmental agreement between the village and other local taxing bodies for distributing the revenue gained by a 0.25 percent sales tax increase the village plans to implement if home rule status is granted.
In other business, the board plans to:
  • Honor David Rubarth for 23 years of service and Jim Tresouthick for more than 19 years of service to the village in their positions with the Public Works Department
  • Consider a resolution authorizing the $395,000 street resurfacing program for 2018
  • Consider allocating $45,000 in Motor Fuel Tax funds for purchasing rock salt to treat village streets during winter weather
  • Set the property tax levy of  $6.3 million, a 4.9 percent increase over the current levy.

The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.
