Beginning Feb. 24, Flossmoor attorney Jay Readey will be one of 60 persons from across the country participating in the Presidential Leadership Scholars program.

Readey was nominated to participate in the program by U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.). He was selected from 900 candidates.

“I have no doubt that this opportunity will allow Jay to further develop his leadership talents and go on to become an exceptional leader,” the congresswoman said.

The Presidential Leadership Scholars program focuses on four principles: vision and communication; decision-making; influence and persuasion; and building coalitions.

During the series of six weekend sessions, Readey will be given in-depth analyses of how leaders across all sectors address similar types of challenges. Case studies cover expansive approaches to leadership theory, with examples presented by former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, as well as university professors and former administration officials.

“I am truly honored to have been selected for this tremendous opportunity,” Readey said. “I hope to take as much away from this experience as possible and use it to better our communities.”

As the executive director of the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Readey helps provide legal services in the areas of fair housing, employment discrimination and educational equity.

He is currently working on the Innovation Houses and Opportunity Hubs project being designed to provide housing and job opportunities to improve struggling communities.

“I hope that through the Presidential Leadership Scholars Program I am able to raise interest of my current project in order to reduce violence and create stability within our communities,” Readey said.

A graduate of Yale University, Yale Law School and the Yale School of Management, Readey previously operated as a social entrepreneur, consultant and lawyer in private practice, specializing in non-profit social enterprises.

He founded and served as CEO of MetroAlliance, a consultant for nonprofit agencies and community building strategies, and served as board president of NeighborScapes, an organization that funds summer job programs for disadvantaged youth. He also provided legal services for Metro Home Services, a neighborhood development program that creates affordable housing and dynamic metropolitan communities.

Readey is publisher of RaceandPoverty.org, co-chair of the Southland Human Services Council and an active board member of South-Southwest Suburban United Way.
