District 161 approves breakfast, lunch price increases

The Flossmoor Elementary School District 161 Board of Education approved modest increases to student breakfast and lunch prices for the 2026-27 school year as part of its consent agenda June 15.

Under the approved measure, the cost of a paid lunch will increase from $3.75 to $3.85, while the price of a paid breakfast will rise from $1.85 to $2.00 beginning with the 2026-27 school year.

According to district documents, the lunch increase is required under the federal Paid Lunch Equity program, a provision of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The program is intended to ensure that prices paid by families more closely align with reimbursement rates schools receive for free and reduced-price meals. District officials said schools participating in the National School Lunch Program must complete the required calculation each year.

District administrators said the breakfast increase is being made in accordance with guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education.

The recommendation was presented by Associate Superintendent Frances LaBella and Assistant Business Manager Kendall Gant. District documents stated that there are no additional costs associated with the action beyond the price adjustments themselves.

The measure was approved as part of the board’s consent agenda, which groups routine items into a single vote.
