Flossmoor School District 161 schools earn national recognition for building culture of belonging

Flossmoor School District 161 announced on Tuesday, April 28, that Flossmoor Hills Elementary School and Serena Hills Elementary School have both been named 2025–2026 Capturing Kids’ Hearts® National Showcase Schools.

The national recognition highlights each school’s intentional focus on relationships, student engagement and creating a positive learning environment.

Under the leadership of Principal Evita McNeil-Dobson at Flossmoor Hills Elementary and Principal Elizabeth Reich at Serena Hills Elementary, both schools have demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering meaningful connections where students feel a deep sense of belonging and support, district officials said.

This designation is awarded to schools that prioritize both the academic and emotional well-being of every child.

“Creating a culture where students feel seen, valued, and connected is at the heart of everything we do,” said Dana Smith, District 161 superintendent. “We are incredibly proud of the work happening in both buildings and the leadership of Principals McNeil-Dobson and Reich.”

Capturing Kids’ Hearts recognizes schools across the country that are making a lasting difference by strengthening connections and cultivating environments where students are supported, challenged, and inspired.
