The Homewood Science Center announced Tuesday, April 28, that artist, beekeeper and environmental educator Janelle Dunlap will be the featured speaker at the Chicago Southland STEM Network meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 7.

The event hosted by the Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, is free and open to the public. Educators, families, students and community members are welcome.
Dunlap will share insights from her interdisciplinary practice and explore how art can serve as a powerful tool to inspire environmental awareness and community connection. Her presentation will highlight ways to integrate creativity into STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning and foster deeper engagement among young people.
Dunlap’s work sits at the dynamic intersection of creative placemaking, environmental stewardship, youth development and the arts, according to HSC officials. Through her innovative projects, she engages communities in meaningful conversations about sustainability, pollinators, and the natural world — often transforming public spaces into interactive learning environments.
Dunlap is collaborating with the Homewood Science Center’s newly formed STEAM Team (science, technology, engineering, art and math), a high school volunteer group that meets monthly to contribute ideas and leadership for programs, exhibits and community initiatives. This partnership reflects the center’s commitment to empowering youth voices and cultivating the next generation of STEM and creative leaders.
“This is an exciting opportunity for our community to experience how art, science and environmental education can come together in meaningful and impactful ways,” said Edie Dobrez, science center executive director. “Janelle’s work aligns beautifully with our mission to inspire curiosity, creativity and lifelong learning.”
The Chicago Southland STEM Network, led by the Homewood Science Center, brings together educators, organizations, and community members to strengthen STEM education and opportunities throughout the region.
