Homewood Science Center will host its annual Girls STEAM Celebration on Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Homewood-Flossmoor High School’s state-of-the-art Net Zero Science Building.
The event will include up to 100 middle school girls from James Hart and Parker Junior High for a day of exploration, empowerment and real-world connection to careers in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM).
Despite progress in recent decades, women remain underrepresented in many STEAM fields — particularly in engineering, computer science and certain technology sectors. National data shows that women earn fewer degrees and hold a smaller percentage of leadership roles in several high-growth STEM industries.
Research consistently demonstrates that middle school is a critical window. During these years, many girls begin to question whether they “belong” in math and science spaces. Without visible role models, encouragement, and hands-on exposure, interest can decline — even among highly capable students.
The Girls STEAM Celebration directly addresses this gap by providing young women with:
- Visible female role models in STEAM careers.
- Hands-on, confidence-building experiences.
- Early exposure to high school pathways and advanced coursework.
- A supportive peer environment that normalizes girls thriving in STEAM.
“Introducing girls to STEAM role models and educational pathways during middle school is powerful,” said Edie Dobrez, executive director of Homewood Science Center. “When girls can see women who look like them thriving in STEAM fields, they begin to envision those possibilities for themselves.”
The event is made possible through partnership with Homewood-Flossmoor High School, James Hart School and Parker Junior High. The middle schools are assisting with student recruitment, transportation and chaperones to ensure equitable access for all interested students.
A highlight of the day will be the STEAM Career Showcase, where more than 20 women professionals will lead interactive demonstrations and share insights about their education and career journeys. In addition, high school student volunteers will help guide and mentor participants throughout the experience.
Lunch will be provided, and all activities are free to participating students.
Since its inception, the Girls STEAM Celebration has connected hundreds of young women with mentors, expanded awareness of career pathways, and strengthened confidence in their academic futures.
Community members can support the event through donations or by joining fundraising efforts such as TEAM Willa, a grassroots initiative led by longtime supporter Willa Lee.
