The Marian Catholic High School fencing program concluded the final dual meet of the season at home on Jan. 17.
The Spartans hosted the Great Lakes High School Fencing Conference South vs. North Dual Meet, where both the men’s and women’s teams finished the day with 2-3 records against North Division schools.
The Marian men improved their conference record to 4-9 with decisive victories over Brookfield Academy and Marian Central Catholic. However, they fell to Libertyville/Vernon Hills, Catholic Memorial High and Stevenson.
The Spartan women finished the day with a 3-10 conference record, partially due to forfeits caused by roster gaps. They defeated Brookfield Academy and Marian Central but lost to Libertyville/Vernon Hills, Catholic Memorial, and Stevenson.
During intermission, Marian recognized senior Spartan fencers Jose Perez, Jack O’Shea, Charlee Rowan, Brazil McGruder and Elijah Wagner. The fencers, along with their families, stood in the center of the gym as head coach Ann Jones praised them for their accomplishments during their final home meet.
“Their season is not over,” Jones said. “We expect great things.”
The results from the dual meets will be used to seed the upcoming conference championship meet on Jan. 31 at New Trier High School.
Following the division matches, Marian Catholic retained the Family Feud trophy for another year in the annual neighborhood bout against the Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings. Senior Sabre Co-Captain Wagner clinched the trophy with a 5-3 victory over H-F’s Nikolai Lawrence.
