Fights at H-F football game lead to new rules

Homewood-Flossmoor High School’s first football game victory Friday, Aug. 29, was marred by fights in the stands.

Police removed several students from the stands and patrolled the H-F stadium and parking lot.

“We are deeply disappointed by the behavior of several individuals at the football game Friday. Their actions do not reflect the pride, respect, and sportsmanship that are the foundation of Viking Excellence,” said Superintendent Jennifer Norrell in a message to parents, students and the H-F community. She started in her position July 1. This was the first H-F game under her tenure.

The disruptions started before half-time. Norrell said the timing was especially disappointing because H-F was presenting a “Salute to Service” recognizing local veterans and thanking them for their service.

“Additionally, Illinois Rep. Will Davis served as a guest band conductor for the H-F Fight Song and the family of former Athletic Director Alec Anderson, who joined us as we honored his memory, all deserved so much better from our community. Moments meant for gratitude, unity and remembrance were overshadowed by behavior that falls far short of our values,” Norrell said in her message.

Davis represents Homewood and Flossmoor in the Illinois Legislature.

The H-F administration is instituting new rules for future games:

  • H-F students must present their H-F IDs for admittance.
  • Adults must present a valid driver’s license or state ID.
  • Any alumni (ages 18-20) must complete an alumni registration and verification. The process will be shared prior to the game.

Norrell said increased supervision and security will be present at games. She said students and those attending sporting events will be reminded of the H-F conduct expectations.
