Rep. Kelly hosts town hall on tax bill’s economic dangers

What will the just passed Congressional tax bill mean for you?
Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Ill., will lead a “teach-in” town hall from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, on what she believes are the economic dangers and unfairness of the GOP-passed tax bill. The event will be in the sanctuary of Victory Apostolic Church, 20801 Matteson Ave. in Matteson.
No Democratic legislators supported the measure that passed just before Congress left for the Christmas holiday break.

The measure permanently reduced corporate tax rates from 35 to 21 percent and reduced the tax burden of the country’s wealthiest citizens. It doubled the standard deduction for individuals and families and increased the child tax credit, but those rates expire in 2025 and Congress eliminated the personal exemption. It also did away with the Affordable Care Act mandate that each citizen have health insurance.

The new law is expected to increase the country’s deficit by more than $1.5 trillion.
Kelly, who represents Homewood and Flossmoor in Congress, said the teach-in will mark the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday “by reminding citizens to continue advocating for economic justice and progressive economic policy in America.”
