The Heather Hill Civic Association’s Beautification Committee will hand out 10 blue ribbons for outstanding curb appeal through its Beautification Walk. Judging is ongoing with the winners being announced at the Aug. 12 association meeting.
The head of the beautification committee, Debora Spain, explained judges will consider freshly cut grass, a tidy appearance with things like flowers that help homes stand out, and overall lawn appearance.
Things that may give a negative reaction include visible garbage cans, cars on flats or jacks, hanging gutters or falling blinds.
The judges consist of HHCA members and regular Heather Hill residents, including Spain, Barbara Karstrom, Belgee Falkner, Homewood resident Chris Condon, Chrissy Roberts, Cynthia Frierson, Maura Teresko, Marilyn Standford, Berrenda Love-Lewis and Nancy Rice.
All homes in the neighborhood will be considered, with residents able to learn more on the HHCA website. Handouts announced the Beautification Walk were delivered to residents.
There will be 15 awards in total, with 10 blue ribbon awards and honorable mentions for the runners-up.
The first walk for judging took place May 30 and 31, Spain said. The second walk for final judging will be in late July.
The idea for the awards program came from a similar event on Polly Lane around the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic when residents spent more time at home. Their initiatives encouraged others to take care of the outside of their homes.
“We think that by having a small competition with our neighbors that will pick up the pace of, ‘Hey let’s spruce up our neighborhood!’” Spain said.
