Viaduct closure pushed back to June 11

Homewood announced Friday, June 5, that the closure of Dixie Highway viaduct, originally scheduled for June 8, has been pushed back to Thursday, June 11, as the contractor’s crews continue to work on utility location in the area.

On June 2 village officials released a detour map that shows two main detour routes for motorists to use during the five-month closure of the viaduct, which will include closure of Park Avenue at the viaduct.

One route follows 183rd Street west from Dixie Highway, Governors Highway north and 175th Street east. Another route follows Ridge Road east from Dixie Highway to Ashland Avenue then north to 171st Street.

Park Avenue north of 183rd Street and south of 175th will be open to local traffic only. Village officials urged motorists not to try cutting through the Governors Park and Ravisloe neighborhoods to avoid congestion on residential streets and traffic problems for residents of the area.

At the Homewood Business Association meeting Tuesday, June 2, Interim Economic and Community Development Director Noah Schumerth also cautioned against using the Flosswood Condomimiums driveway and Berkot’s Super Food parking lot as turnarounds.

Pace Bus Route 356 will not operate on Wood Street south of 171st Street and Dixie Highway north of Ridge Road. Regular service will resume when construction is complete.

The long-awaited project will repair a drainage line north of the viaduct that is believed to be a primary cause of chronic flooding that has been happening for decades. The roadway from the viaduct north to Sycamore Drive will also be resurfaced.
