  • Consider a request from Homewood Creative Alliance for permission to create an art installation in Independence Park at the corner of Dixie Highway and Hickory Road. The Homewood Wishing Tree would make temporary use of the concrete structure in the park.

Notices

Dixie Highway Viaduct Project. The project to repair the viaduct drainage system and resurface Dixie Highway north of the viaduct will officially begin Monday, June 1. The 90-day closure of the viaduct to traffic will begin June 8, according to village officials. The detour route will follow 175th Street, Governor’s Highway and 183rd Street.

Court Closure Notice. The tennis court in Orchard Park on Olive Road in Homewood will be closed Monday, June 1 through Friday, June 5, for repairs and improvements.

Participate in Homewood’s 4th of July Parade. Homewood is inviting floats, entertainers, marching groups, performers, businesses, community organizations and creative minds who want to be part of this historic celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence. Please fill out this registration form no later than June 20.

Flossmoor Public Library Closure. The library will be closed from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, June 5, for staff in-service.

Book Donation Hiatus. Friends of the Homewood Library are unable to take donations from June through August. Anyone who has books to donate, might consider donating to nearby libraries or Good Will this summer, including Chicago Heights Public Library, 25 W. 15th St.; Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave.; Park Forest Public Library, 400 Lakewood Blvd.; Glenwood-Lynwood Library, 19901 Stony Island Ave. (children’s books only).

Village Door Still Open. The Cancer Support Center announced in April that the Village Door store on Ridge Road in Homewood would close at the end of the year, but store manager Diane Matthews said the store and its volunteers are still welcoming donations of gently used household items and furniture. Smaller items can be dropped off at the shop anytime during shop hours. For donations of furniture items, send photos to [email protected] along with contact information to coordinate the intake.

Monday, June 1

Friends of HPL. The Friends of the Homewood Public Library will meet from 10 a.m. to noon at the library, 17917 Dixie Highway.

Old Fashion Donuts Ribbon Cutting. New donut shop at 18121 Harwood Ave. in Homewood will hold a ribbon cutting event from 4 to 5:30 p.m. with free donuts while supplies last. Hibbing Hotdogs, adjacent to the donut shop, will open June 3.

Teen Leadership Council. Teens in grades 7 through 12 meet in The FORT at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. to help with programming ideas, book suggestions, or anything else that will help make the world around us a better place. Register here.

Tuesday, June 2

Park Storytime. Homewood Public Library presents stories for babies to 2nd-graders from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Heritage Park on Idlewild Lane just west of Riegel Road in Homewood. In case of inclement weather, storytime will move inside to the library at 17917 Dixie Highway. Register here.

Senior Chair Yoga. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host chair yoga for seniors led by Liz Smith of Serendipity Yoga from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Register here

Pop Culture Dance. Spotlight Performance Academy will offer a class on dance combinations set to songs from theatre, TV, movies, TikTok and YouTube. Dance styles will vary among jazz, modern, hip hop and ballet. No dance experience is necessary. All classes will be held at the Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway. Tuition is $80. Session 1 classes will meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:15 p.m. through June 23. Session 2 classes will run July 7 through July 28.

Choo-Choo Ride. A four-ish mile easy paced bike ride around Homewood and Flossmoor. Starts at 6:30 p.m. at GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. Ends at the shop with a cool treat.

Wednesday, June 3

Read, Rock, n’ Rhyme. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host story time for kids age newborn to 7 years old. Kids will be able to dance, shake and wiggle as they share stories, songs, rhymes, and more from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in the Rauch Reading Room. Register here.

Pokémon Club. Youngsters and teens are invited to the meeting room at the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 5 to 6 p.m. to trade Pokémon cards and play games. Bring your battle decks, doubles, and extras to the library to battle and trade with other collectors. Register here.

Movie Night. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host a movie for kids aged 10 to 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Helen Wilson Meeting Room. Cozy attire and blankets are encouraged. Art & Garden Street Fair. Homewood will host its annual street fair along Martin Avenue between Ridge Road and Hickory Road. Festival hours are 4 to 9 p.m. today. Organizers expect more than 80 local and regional artisan vendors selling art, handmade goods, vintage finds, garden décor and locally sourced food. Music from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday by Big Weekend followed from 7 to 9 p.m. by Not My Dad. A wide selection of food trucks, local restaurants and beverage vendors will be available throughout the event.

Teen Summer Reading Blast Off. Celebrate the start of Summer Reading with live music by Septima and Bugs Will Fly, plus sno-cones, games, karaoke, and ice cream sundaes from 6 to 8 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. Register here.

Teen Night at the Club. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. H-F Racquet & Fitness Club gym will be open just for teens. Homewood Farmers Market. The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Martin Square between Chestnut and Ridge roads in downtown Homewood.

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. A 25-mile fitness bike ride. Everyone stays together. Leaves GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 W. 183rd St., every Saturday (weather permitting) at 8 a.m. Returns before 10 a.m. Pace dictated by the riders who show up. Explore our local streets and trail system with Barb & Dan Lawler.

Off-Leash Ride. A nine-mile bike ride at about a 9-to-10 mph pace every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at 8:30 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. Ends back at the shop about 9:30 a.m. for donuts. Kid trailers welcome.

Free face painting will be available on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Kids Maker Space will feature interactive art experiences, including a Homewood Science Center painting project from noon to 3 p.m. and an Art Corner Frames project from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

STEM Saturday. Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, will host its free weekly science play time for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Play opportunities include Pixel Pegs, Nano, Early Math Counts Activities, Makerspace, Imagination Playground, Dinosaur Bones, LEGO Wall and more.

Summer Reading Kick Off. Stop by Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to get started on Summer Reading. There will be two special programs during the day, including T-Rexplorers at 10 a.m., an opportunity to learn about dinosaurs by looking at their bones, and plant swap at 1:30 p.m. Bring your plants to swap with others. Learn more here.

Kick Off to Summer Reading with Dan Gogh’s Grow Show. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host its Summer Reading kick-off from 3 to 4 p.m. The Dan Gogh Grow Show is a hilarious, hoe-down magic show all about growing. Through amazing magic, wacky puppets, and laugh-out-loud comedy, kids discover that reading is like planting a tiny seed in your brain. Register here.

Purple Rain. Freedom Hall, 410 Lakewood Boulevard, Park Forest, will screen the classic film “Purple Rain” at 7 p.m. Celebrate the birthday of Prince by experiencing this legendary movie on the big screen once again. Monday, June 8

Hobo Jungle. The annual summer camp will have sessions from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. from June 8 through June 19 at Flossmoor Park. Kids will learn how to use basic carpentry tools while building full-size, themed structures. Safety is stressed and reinforced. Campers will spend part of their day in the construction area and the rest playing organized games. For kids ages 7 to 13. Minecraft Engineering Using Lego Camp. Sessions for kids ages 5 to 7 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and for kids ages 7 to 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. Bring your favorite Minecraft adventures to life with the camp’s Play-Well instructors. In a Minecraft world powered by LEGO® resources, campers will build shelters to keep out creepers, craft mystical items that only true masters can wield, and perfect our crossbow skills to stop the Wither from taking over. Juneteenth Parade and Block Party. You Matter 2 will present a day of celebration, culture, and community at the fifth annual Juneteenth Parade and Block Party in Flossmoor. The day kicks off with a parade at 10 a.m. featuring local groups, performers, and businesses, followed by a block party in the commuter lot at at 2616 Sterling Ave. filled with music, food, games and connection.

Dungeons & Dragons Camp. Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, will host a D&D camp for kids aged 8 to 12. Camp meets from 4 to 6 p.m. each day through Thursday, June 25. Fee is $100 per child. Register here.

Dancing Away Domestic Violence. The annual fundraiser for Anew: Building Beyond Violence & Abuse, will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at Our Lady of the Heights gym at St. Kieran Parish, 724 195th St., Chicago Heights.
