Computer Class for Adults: Introduction to Word. This class for adults will introduce the basics of using Microsoft Word to draft, save and print digital documents. Experience with a mouse and keyboard is required for this class. Friday, May 15

Cop on a Rooftop. The Homewood and Flossmoor police departments will be participating in the annual Cop on a Rooftop fundraiser. Proceeds from the event will benefit Special Olympics of Illinois. HPD officers will be at the Dunkin’ located at 17579 Halsted St. in Homewood from 6 a.m. until 1 p.m. Officers will be outside of Dunkin’ and in the drive-through greeting customers and sharing information about Special Olympics. FPD officers will be at Dunkin’ at 3608 Vollmer Road from 5 a.m. to noon. Additional information can be found on the Special Olympics of Illinois website, www.soil.org.

Cricut. Unbox it. Power it on. Create something in a hands-on session designed to help you get comfortable with your Cricut machine and start creating. Hosted from 5 to 7 p.m. at Beyond the Book, 18063 Dixie Highway.

Saturday, May 16

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. A 25-mile fitness bike ride. Everyone stays together. Leaves GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 W. 183rd St., every Saturday (weather permitting) at 8 a.m. Returns before 10 a.m. Pace dictated by the riders who show up. Explore our local streets and trail system with Barb & Dan Lawler.

Off-Leash Ride. A nine-mile bike ride at about a 9-to-10 mph pace every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at 8:30 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. Ends back at the shop about 9:30 a.m. for donuts. Kid trailers welcome.

Homewood Public Works Open House. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Homewood Public Works facility, 17755 Ashland Ave., members of the community will get a behind-the-scenes look at the operations, equipment and staff that support the village each day. The event also will feature family-friendly activities, including a dress-up station and refreshments. 

STEM Saturday. Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, will host its free weekly science play time for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Play opportunities include Pixel Pegs, Nano, Early Math Counts Activities, Makerspace, Imagination Playground, Dinosaur Bones, LEGO Wall and more.

Adult Golf Clinic: Woods. Coyote Run Golf Course, 888 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor will host a workshop from 10 to 11 a.m. on how to hit with woods. Topics include tee height, launch angle and ball position. See what technology could do for your game. For anyone age 18 and up. Advanced Computer Class for Adults: Excel Formulas and Functions. Learn how formulas differ from functions, how to create accurate formulas and how to use Excel’s function wizard to create functions that will average, count, find high and low values in a series of numbers and more. The class will meet from 10 a.m. to noon in the Helen Wilson Meeting Room at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. To get the most from this session, you should be familiar with the basic layout of an Excel spreadsheet and know how to input text and numbers into a spreadsheet. The library provides students with laptops for this class. Please do not bring your own device. Book Brunch. Teens in grades 7 through 12 who think the two greatest things in life are food and reading are invited to The FORT in Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 10:30 a.m. to noon for breakfast and books, whether reading, discussing or just hanging out. Professor Oak’s Trading Lab. Pokémon trainers ages 6 to 18 are invited to the Helen Wilson Meeting Room from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., to trade cards and enjoy friendly battles in a relaxed setting. Whether participants are new to the Pokémon Trading Card Game or already know the basics, this program offers a fun space to share cards, play, and enjoy the Pokémon world together. Register here.

Family Campout. Homewood-Flossmoor Park District will host a family campout from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the next morning at Woodborough Park, 18402 Aberdeen St. in Homewood. Participants will participate in a night hike, s’mores, games and sleep in the park overnight. Register here.

Hula Dancers. Learn about hula dancing as the Hula Chicago company performs from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Helen Wilson Meeting Room at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. There will be some instruction and audience participation.

Friday, May 22

Walk Through Our Mission. You Matter 2 will host an immersive evening at Flossmoor Community Church, that introduces the organization’s work with youth through storytelling, creativity and connection. Guests will journey through interactive stations led by students, alumni and volunteers, experiencing firsthand how You Matter 2 supports youth from middle school through career readiness. The evening will conclude with a Spotlight Program featuring student stories, a live auction, and a collective paddle raise, which is a fundraising practice for attendees to raise their bidder paddles to commit to specific donation levels, to support  programs. Auditions for The Prom. The Drama Group will be hosting auditions from 6 to 10 p.m. at Milord Theatre, 330 West 202nd St. in Chicago Heights, for it’s summer musical, “The Prom.” This production is open to anyone 16 and older. Click here for audition details

Monday, June 8

Hobo Jungle. The annual summer camp will have sessions from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. from June 8 through June 19 at Flossmoor Park. Kids will learn how to use basic carpentry tools while building full-size, themed structures. Safety is stressed and reinforced. Campers will spend part of their day in the construction area and the rest playing organized games. For kids ages 7 to 13. Minecraft Engineering Using Lego Camp. Sessions for kids ages 5 to 7 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and for kids ages 7 to 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. Bring your favorite Minecraft adventures to life with the camp’s Play-Well instructors. In a Minecraft world powered by LEGO® resources, campers will build shelters to keep out creepers, craft mystical items that only true masters can wield, and perfect our crossbow skills to stop the Wither from taking over. Pride Fest. Homewood-Flossmoor Park District in partnership with the villages of Flossmoor and Homewood will host the annual community-wide Pride celebration in Flossmoor Park starting at 5 p.m. The free party will include live music, food trucks, vendors and fun.

Friday, June 19

Juneteenth Parade and Block Party. You Matter 2 will present a day of celebration, culture, and community at the fifth annual Juneteenth Parade and Block Party in Flossmoor. The day kicks off with a parade at 10 a.m. featuring local groups, performers, and businesses, followed by a block party in the commuter lot at at 2616 Sterling Ave. filled with music, food, games, and connection. 

Saturday, June 27

Dancing Away Domestic Violence. The annual fundraiser for Anew: Building Beyond Violence & Abuse, will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at Our Lady of the Heights gym at St. Kieran Parish, 724 195th St., Chicago Heights. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids 12 and younger, kids 5 and younger are free. An event T-shirt is $12. All proceeds benefit Anew’s programs. Tickets can be purchased here.
