Keep Pets on Leash. Homewood reminds residents about the importance of keeping pets leashed when they are outside. The village is strengthening enforcement of the “Loose Dogs and Cats” ordinance in response to an increase in loose animal incidents, which can pose public safety risks to both people and pets. The village recently increased the fine for loose pet violations from $25 to $150. The existing maximum fine remains at $750.

Bel Canto Community Choir Registration. Anyone from teens to adults who is interested in singing with the Bel Canto Community Choir can register for the summer session. The choir performs at community events such as Homewood-Flossmoor’s Pride Fest and Flossmoor’s Chamber Night, where the choir gets to open for the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. There are two sessions available: Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Classes are held at the Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, starting May 27. As with all Spotlight programming, tuition assistance is available. 

Flossmoor Public Works Department will be applying an organic herbicide to the rights-of-way and landscape beds in Flossmoor’s Central Business District between 3 and 7 a.m. on Monday, May 4, and Tuesday, May 5. Applications will be applied as needed during suitable weather conditions to complete non-selective weed control. Stay off the treated areas until they are dry. Property Tax Exemption Deadline. The deadline to apply for property tax savings is Friday, May 15. Click here for more information.

Flossmoor’s New Vehicle Use Fee. Flossmoor’s new vehicle use fee, which replaces vehicle stickers, went into effect Friday, May 1. Click here for more information.

Homewood’s Vehicle Stickers on Sale. Homewood’s required vehicle stickers went on sale April 1. Residents have until May 31 to purchase their stickers. Residents and businesses should have received a sticker application in the mail. Stickers can be purchased online; in person at village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road; by using the drop-box outside the main village hall entrance; or through the village’s app. Click here for more information.

Friends of HPL. The Friends of the Homewood Public Library will meet from 10 a.m. to noon at the library, 17917 Dixie Highway.

Art in S.T.E.A.M. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host from 4 to 5 p.m. a chance for tweens and teens to embrace their creative side while exploring the art aspect of STEAM. Other elements of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) also will be incorporated in some projects. Registration required.

Ask an Expert: Tech Help Class. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host an opportunity from 6 to 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room to ask questions of a tech expert and learn the basics of computers, the internet, smartphones, and more. Register here.

South Suburbs for Greenspace Community Meeting. SSG will provide an update on the redevelopment of Calumet Country Club and address other local issues at 7 p.m. in Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave.

Teen Leadership Council. Teens in grades 7 through 12 meet in The FORT at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. to help with programming ideas, book suggestions, or anything else that will help make the world around us a better place. Register here.

Rising Readers. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host story time from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Rauch Reading Room for ages newborn to 6 years old with stories, songs, bubbles and more. Register here.

The Service Hour. Anyone age 10 to 18 can join the monthly effort to help out in the community. Hosted in The Attic at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Register here.

Art in the Park. The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District will host an afternoon of creativity for kids from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Millennium Park, 18600 Harwood Ave. in Homewood. This is a free  event, and no registration is required. Simply show up and enjoy fresh air, imagination, and plenty of fun.

Trivia Tuesday at Lassen’s Tap. Bring a team and compete in Lassen’s trivia contest from 8 to 11 p.m. at 2131 W. 183rd St. in Homewood.

Afternoon Book Discussion: Everyone on This Train is a Suspect. Meet in the conference room at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., from 3 to 4 p.m. to discuss “Everyone on This Train is a Suspect” by Benjamin Stevenson. H-F High Open Mic. Bergstein’s NY Deli, 18064 Martin Ave. in Homewood, will host a display of Homewood-Flossmoor High School students’ art and an open mic for performers from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Artist and Beekeeper at STEM Network Meeting. Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, will host the Chicago Southland STEM Network meeting at 7 p.m. featuring artist, beekeeper and environmental educator Janelle Dunlap. The event is free and open to the public. Educators, families, students and community members are welcome.

Pebbles & Pins. The Homewood-Flossmoor High School Design Thinking class students are inviting the community to stop by Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Road, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. to paint meaningful messages on rocks and clothespins. The goal of the project is to spread the painted items around the community to share the hopeful messages.

Saturday, May 9

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. A 25-mile fitness bike ride. Everyone stays together. Leaves GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 W. 183rd St., every Saturday (weather permitting) at 8 a.m. Returns before 10 a.m. Pace dictated by the riders who show up. Explore our local streets and trail system with Barb & Dan Lawler.

Off-Leash Ride. A nine-mile bike ride at about a 9-to-10 mph pace every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at 8:30 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. Ends back at the shop about 9:30 a.m. for donuts. Kid trailers welcome.

Kayaking Adventure. The H-F Park District is sponsoring a day of kayaking. Meet at Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood at 9 a.m. then paddle the scenic Kankakee River. Return by 5 p.m. This guided day trip offers the perfect blend of recreation and nature as you spend time on the water, take in beautiful river views, and unwind at a comfortable pace. Fee includes transportation from the Irwin Center, a single-kayak rental, life vest and paddle. For people age 18 and up. Fee is $99 for park district residents, $109 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Green Thumb Saturdays: Body Smart Gardening. Tony Greep, U of I Extension Master Gardener, will offer advice about how gardeners can protect themselves from injury while gardening. The session will be from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. at Homewood village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road. 

STEM Saturday. Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, will host its free weekly science play time for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Play opportunities include Pixel Pegs, Nano, Early Math Counts Activities, Makerspace, Imagination Playground, Dinosaur Bones, LEGO Wall and more.

Peaceful Sound Bath. Preston Klik will guide a relaxing sound meditation in the Helen Wilson Meeting Room at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Participants should arrive by 1:15 p.m. Late arrivals will not be admitted to avoid disrupting the session, which is a 90-minute acoustic journey with periods of verbal guidance. Participants are invited to bring a yoga mat, blanket, and a pillow if they wish. A limited number of chairs will be available. Register here

Annabelle Rudan at Rudy’s. Annabelle Rudan will perform acoustic music starting at 6 p.m. at Rudy’s adjacent to Balagio Ristorante, 17501 Dixie Highway in Homewood.

Who’s Birthday: A Tribute to Pete Townsend. Homewood Art Council will host its second annual tribute to The Who at 7 p.m. at Izaak Walton Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road in Homewood.  Performers will include Dolph Chaney, Preston Pisellini of The Webstirs, and Joe Starita, Bart and Miranda Winters of Melkbelly dive into the Pete Townshend catalog for an evening out in the woods. Friday, May 22

Walk Through Our Mission. You Matter 2 will host an immersive evening at Flossmoor Community Church, that introduces the organization’s work with youth through storytelling, creativity and connection. Guests will journey through interactive stations led by students, alumni and volunteers, experiencing firsthand how You Matter 2 supports youth from middle school through career readiness. The evening will conclude with a Spotlight Program featuring student stories, a live auction, and a collective paddle raise, which is a fundraising practice for attendees to raise their bidder paddles to commit to specific donation levels, to support  programs. Pride Fest. Homewood-Flossmoor Park District in partnership with the villages of Flossmoor and Homewood will host the annual community-wide Pride celebration in Flossmoor Park starting at 5 p.m. The free party will include live music, food trucks, vendors and fun.

Friday, June 19

Juneteenth Parade and Block Party. You Matter 2 will present a day of celebration, culture, and community at the annual Juneteenth Parade and Block Party in Flossmoor. The day kicks off with a parade featuring local groups, performers, and businesses, followed by a block party filled with music, food, games, and connection. 

Saturday, June 27

Dancing Away Domestic Violence. The annual fundraiser for Anew: Building Beyond Violence & Abuse, will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at Our Lady of the Heights gym at St. Kieran Parish, 724 195th St., Chicago Heights. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids 12 and younger, kids 5 and younger are free. An event T-shirt is $12. All proceeds benefit Anew’s programs. Tickets can be purchased here.
