Homewood’s fourth annual World Migratory Bird Day Celebration will take place from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at the Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road.
Coffee and muffins will be available at 7 a.m. in Senior Hall, and there will be a bird-watching tour led by the Thorn Creek Audubon Council from 8 to 10 a.m. Past bird observations during spring at Izaak Walton have identified more than 70 species.
The annual celebration is required to maintain Homewood’s Bird City Illinois status awarded by the Audubon Council of Illinois.
The designation recognizes Homewood’s initiatives to create and maintain native habitat to support birds and insects as well as providing educational programs for residents, such as the Green Thumb Saturday programs.
The international theme for 2026 is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!”
Environment for the Americas coordinates World Migratory Bird Day and sponsors community-based work to protect and persevere migratory birds across the hemisphere.
Orgnanizers invite the community to bring a picnic and explore the grounds following the bird-watching tour.
