Homewood-Flossmoor High School is expanding its dual credit program with Prairie State College that allows qualified H-F students to take up to six courses for college credit.
At the Feb. 17 District 233 meeting, Superintendent Jennifer Norrell said the test program is being expanded next school year with more offerings. Some courses will now be open to freshmen and sophomores.
The college credit courses are taught at H-F by H-F teachers who are designated as PSC adjunct faculty. An expenditure of $5,000 was approved by the school board to cover H-F teachers’ tuition for the PSC endorsement program, and for Childhood Development and Early Childhood coursework.
School counselors or teachers can recommend students for the dual-credit program. H-F will be absorbing the PSC costs, she said.
Students can earn both H-F credit and PSC credit for Business & Personal Law; Entrepreneurship & Management; Introduction to Business; Computer Applications; Advanced Computer Applications; Child Development Theory & Lab; Automotive: electrical & brakes, steering, suspension, alignment; Small Engineer Repair/Engine Repair; Welding Fabrication & Advanced Processes; Weld Tech II; Machine Tool Technology.
In other business, the board agreed to a contract for $877,788 with Maneval Paving of Ingleside for the repaving of the tennis courts. An assessment of the tennis courts showed that they are not in need of a total rebuild. Consequently, the bid was approximately $300,000 under budget.
The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District will pay 40% of the cost for the tennis courts work.
The board also agreed to a $789,500 contract with G.E. Riddiford Company, Inc. of Arlington Heights for a new roof over the library and T-wing of the South Building. That cost was originally estimated between $650,000 and $690,000. The bids were higher due to additional labor costs.
