Podcast ‘Flossmoor in Fifteen’ turns village history into 15-minute stories

Flossmoor author and community advocate Tom Dobrez is taking his love of local history to the airwaves with a new weekly podcast, “Flossmoor in Fifteen,” that turns the village’s past into fast-paced 15‑minute episodes.

Recently launched, “Flossmoor in Fifteen” drops a new episode every Friday, each one drawn from Dobrez’s recent book, “A More Perfect Place… The Story of Flossmoor.”

The series is designed for listeners across the Homewood-Flossmoor area and the wider Southland who are curious about how Flossmoor became the community it is today.

The first episode digs into Flossmoor’s golf roots and how early courses helped shape the town’s identity. Future installments will highlight memorable local characters while keeping a steady focus on two themes that run through Dobrez’s work: the village’s path toward integration and residents’ drive for excellence in their pursuits, from civic leadership to the arts and athletics.

Dobrez has lived in Flossmoor since first grade and is the president and founder of Flossmoor’s Future, the citizen‑led group behind events such as the 60422 Zip Code Day celebration and the Hidden Gem Half Marathon, which recently was selected Race of the Year by the Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) for the third time in four years.

According to Dobrez, the podcast, is a natural extension of his volunteer work.

“People know Flossmoor for its neighborhoods and its energy today, but the stories that got us here are just as compelling,” Dobrez said. “With ‘Flossmoor in Fifteen,’ you can learn something new about this place in the time it takes to drive to the Metra station.”

“Flossmoor in Fifteen” is available on major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Listeners also can visit FlossmoorHistoryBook.com to stream episodes, purchase “A More Perfect Place… The Story of Flossmoor,” and see dates for upcoming screenings of the 26‑minute film “Flossmoor: A More Perfect Place,” based on the book.
