Metra to hold awareness event promoting Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Metra will mark January’s National Human Trafficking Prevention Month by handing out informational magnets to customers from 6:30 to 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at all downtown stations (while supplies last).

The magnets give tips to help riders “know the signs” and identify potential human trafficking on Metra trains, such as riders wearing seasonally inappropriate clothing, not being allowed to speak for themselves, not having their own ticket or fare, and having few or no personal belongings. The magnets also highlight the website for Reclaim13 (www.reclaim13.org), an organization that works to combat trafficking and support victims.

The event is part of an overall effort by Metra and Reclaim13 to prevent the use of trains to transport human trafficking victims, including a symposium on the topic last year, informational signs and social media posts, and training for its conductors and other front-line workers.

“By adding our riders’ eyes and ears to our own, we can make sure we are doing everything we can to identify human trafficking and support victims,” said Metra Executive Director/CEO Jim Derwinski.
