When Calhoon graduated from H-F in 2021, he received a scholarship from HFEO, the teachers union, to support him as he pursued a teaching degree. Calhoon will graduate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in music education.
He received an additional $400 from HFEO to support him while he’s student teaching at Century Middle School in Orland Park for eight weeks, and at Lincoln-Way Central High for eight weeks.
Calhoon’s primary instrument is double bass. He also has had training in string, woodwind and brass instruments, a requirement for his Illinois K-12 music teacher license.
While a student at H-F, Calhoon was a member of the Vikings marching band, the Viking Jazz Band, jazz combo, symphonic strings and was in the pit orchestra for the musicals. He was an officer with Tri-M music honor society.
Calhoon is the son of Rob Calhoon and Alanna Cotch of Flossmoor.
