The Village of Homewood has named Thomas Johnson as its new chief of police following an internal interview process.
Johnson will assume leadership of the Homewood Police Department on Jan. 10, following the retirement of Police Chief Denise McGrath on Jan. 9.

Village officials said Johnson was selected based on his experience, leadership skills and commitment to public safety and community engagement. Johnson served for seven years with the Village of Glenwood Police Department before joining the Homewood Police Department in 2009. Most recently, Johnson has served as deputy chief since February 2024.
“I’m confident that Chief Johnson will continue to enhance the police department’s strong tradition of professionalism, service and engagement,” Village Manager Napoleon Haney said. “Tom leads an exceptional team that is eager to work alongside him as he continues the department’s and community’s legacy of progress and excellence.”
As chief of police, Johnson will oversee all operations of the Homewood Police Department, including patrol services, investigations, administration and community policing initiatives.
“I am honored to serve as Homewood’s next chief of police,” Johnson said. “I look forward to working alongside the dedicated men and women of the department and continuing to build trust, transparency and collaboration within the Homewood community.”
Johnson will be sworn in at the village board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
