Winter Science Series brings hands-on learning to Flossmoor Library

The Flossmoor Public Library kicked off its new Winter Science Series on Dec. 18, welcoming young learners for an hour of hands-on experiments focused on the science behind snow, ice and everything winter.

The program was created and organized by Youth Services Librarian Krystal Webb who designed the workshop to balance education with fun for children ages 9 to 12.

“I wanted to have something educational during the wintertime that was still fun,” Webb said. “I really like to incorporate science and crafts when working with kids, and this was a great way to do both.”

Participants rotated through several activities, including making “Grinch slime,” building simple battery-powered circuits and creating spinning holiday-themed projects. Webb said the interactive approach helps keep kids engaged, especially when learning scientific concepts.

“You can’t go wrong with slime,” she said. “They love anything messy.”

Jenny Lucas, youth services manager at the library, said the Winter Science Series builds on the success of past summer science programs.

“We’ve done summer science series before, and the kids always had so much fun,” Lucas said. “This is our first time doing a winter version, and we’re excited to offer families something educational and engaging during the colder months.”

Parents attending the program praised the library’s youth programming. Samantha Fiaoni, who brought her children to the workshop, said she makes a point to sign up when science events are offered.

“We’ve done the science series before, and the boys really loved it,” Fiaoni said. “Youth services here really try to offer diverse programming for kids, and there’s always something interesting to choose from.”

Library staff emphasized that registration is required for the Winter Science Series and encouraged families to sign up early. Additional sessions are scheduled for Jan. 22 and Feb. 19, both from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Children can be registered online at flossmoorlibrary.org, in person at the library or by calling the library’s youth services at 708-798-3600.
