Homewood Disposal Holiday Pickup Schedule. There will be no waste pickup on Christmas Day, Dec. 25. For residential customers who normally receive service on Thursday or Friday, pickup will be delayed one day, so Thursday pickup will be on Friday and Friday pickup will be on Saturday.

Flossmoor Village Hall and the Public Works Building Closed. Flossmoor village buildings will be closed all day for the holidays on Wednesday, Dec. 24, and Thursday, Dec. 25.

Homewood Village Hall Closed. Homewood village hall will be closed for the holidays on Wednesday, Dec. 24; Thursday, Dec. 25; and Saturday, Dec. 27.

Ronald McDonald House Donations. The Homewood Police Department is gathering donations for Ronald McDonald House Charities. Staff will be on hand delivering all donations to the Ronald McDonald House in Oak Lawn on Tuesday, Dec. 23. Items can be taken to the front desk of the police department by Monday, Dec. 22. Items could be canned goods, non-perishable food items, trash bags, laundry detergent, cleaning products, food storage containers, hygiene products, gift cards or toys (new and in original packaging). MLK Day of Service Volunteers. Flossmoor is seeking hosts for service projects in the village’s 11th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 19. Leave It for Love. New, unused gifts will be collected through January and then distributed among low-income, isolated older adults throughout the Chicagoland area. Gifts can be dropped at Beyond Borders Café, 1036 Sterling Ave. in Flossmoor and Loulou Belle, 2049 Ridge Road in Homewood. Suggested items include trinkets, tchotchkes, hostess gifts, personal care items, warm weather gear, household décor and non-perishable food. Holiday Tree and Light Recycling. Bring undecorated and unwrapped holiday trees to Irons Oaks Vollmer Road parking lot just west of Western Avenue any time between Dec. 26 and Jan. 23. Stack trees with the trunks pointed toward the parking lot. Community Kinara Lighting. Celebrate Kwanzaa at 5 p.m. in front of Park Place in Flossmoor Park, Flossmoor Road and Braeburn Avenue. Local individuals or families lead the Kwanzaa ceremony each night of the observance. Anyone wishing to serve as a candle lighter can sign up at flossmoor.org.

Saturday, Dec. 27

Kwanzaa Celebration. Calvary Assembly of God Church, 18620 Governors Highway in Flossmoor, will host a Kwanzaa celebration from 3 to 6 p.m. led by LaMarr Darnell Shields. Celebrate community, culture and tradition in an event to honor the spirit of the season with vibrant drumming, uplifting dancing, and a beautiful marketplace of local vendors offering handmade goods and cultural treasures.
