A cozy scene unfolded recently at Parker Junior High as students and staff gathered for an afternoon of stitching, chatting and learning together. 

The Knitting and Crochet Club, open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, has become a beloved space to unwind and pick up a new skill. The club was started by Sarah Rudenga in 2023, and the club has grown steadily. What started as a small gathering has grown into a weekly tradition where students feel welcome and excited to work on their projects. It now welcomes about 30 participants of all ability levels.

At the recent club meeting, students worked on everything from simple scarves and hats to an ambitious Snoopy plush that was beginning to take shape. Beginners get help casting on or starting a chain, while more advanced students share tips, troubleshoot patterns, and cheer each other on.

“We created this club hoping it would be a peaceful place for students to experiment, practice, and express themselves,” Rudenga said. “Watching them encourage one another and take pride in their projects is one of my favorite parts of the week. I am also so grateful to community volunteer Barbara Spears for her support and expertise, which has helped the club continue to grow.”

Eighth grader Rhianna Kleinfelder, an original member, said the club has become one of her favorite parts of school. 

“I like that you can start as many projects as you want and work on whatever you’re in the mood for,” she said. “It’s also a great chance to catch up with friends and talk while we’re making things. It’s relaxing and fun at the same time.”
