Homewood Fire Department launches free smoke alarm installation program for seniorsProvided news

The Village of Homewood Fire Department will participate in the Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation program administered by the Camp I Am Me and Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. The program will distribute up to two free 10-year concealed battery smoke alarms to Homewood residents who are 60 and older.

Homewood Fire will begin installing the smoke detectors to qualified residents Nov. 20.

The Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation program also distributes fire safety education materials in conjunction with the 10-year concealed battery smoke alarms to fire departments in the state of Illinois. Homewood Fire will distribute the educational materials while installing the free smoke alarms.

The program was developed to educate residents on the dangers of fire, how to prevent fire from occurring in the home  and to ensure there are working smoke alarms properly installed in homes.

“Smoke alarms are the most effective early warning devices to have in your home,” said Fire Chief Bob Grabowski. “By having a working smoke alarm in your home, it can help save your life.”

To qualify for the program, Homewood residents must be 60 years old and present a valid ID.

Installations will be on a first come, first served basis. No phone  appointments will be accepted. The first five appointments before Thanksgiving will receive a complimentary kitchen fire blanket.

All qualified Homewood residents can sign up for their free smoke alarms through this google form link: https://forms.gle/fofUd494ocyLpYQ67
