Heather Hill Elementary Raises $650 in 2nd annual Think Pink Day and Penny War

Students at Flossmoor’s Heather Hill Elementary School raised $650 from the 2nd Annual Think Pink Day on Oct. 29. The event was the finale for the Think Pink Penny War, a schoolwide effort.

The students gave their donations to The Cancer Support Center of Homewood and Project Kennedy. Both organizations provide essential services to individuals and families affected by cancer. The Cancer Support Center offers strength, guidance, and emotional care to anyone impacted by the disease. Project Kennedy works to raise awareness and provide services to cancer patients, their families, and their communities, including the donation of handmade blankets as a reminder that no one fights alone.

Heather Hill’s Think Pink initiative was created by second grade teacher Danielle Callahan who was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in December 2023. After six months of chemotherapy and surgery, she returned to her classroom ready to continue teaching.

Reflecting on her experience, Callahan said, “Going through treatment showed me how powerful a supportive community can be. My students and their families helped me through some very difficult days, and I wanted them to understand how much their kindness matters.”

She also wants donors to know their generosity to this student project is appreciated.

This year’s Penny War invited students to participate in a friendly competition to see which grade level could raise the most funds. Second grade students contributed the highest amount and will celebrate with an Italian ice treat in the near future.
