The South Suburban Archaeological Society will host a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at Irwin Community Center, 18120 Highland Ave., that will feature J. Vernon Grubisich, who will talk about the Horton Site, a prehistoric archaeological site in Flossmoor
Grubisich will describe his discovery of the site in 1964, when he was a 14-year-old freshman at Bloom High School. His work on the Horton Site, and three others he identified for the Illinois Archaeological Survey, won him an Outstanding Achievement Award at the 1965 Illinois Science Fair.
Later archaeological excavations, sponsored by the Field Museum, revealed the full dimensions of the site, helping to document the lifeways of Native Americans in the area during the centuries leading up to their first contact with Europeans. Grubisich will describe work at the site in the mid-1960s and its significance.
At the beginning of the meeting there will also be a presentation by members of the LEGO League division of the Homewood-Flossmoor Robotics Club.
The Lego League is for members in the 4th through 8th grades. The international organization, of which the Lego League is a part, took “Unearthed,” or archaeology, as its topic for 2025. The Homewood-Flossmoor chapter, led by coaches Michelle Nelson, Scott Rudin and Scott Smith, have based their projects on the Horton Site.
Lego League members will present what they have accomplished so far, prior to their December participation in an international competition.
