Flossmoor board rejects new liquor license request from Tornado BP gas station

The Flossmoor board of trustees voted 5-1 against a Class BW-1 liquor license request from the Tornado BP gas station, 3950 Vollmer Road, at the Nov. 3 board meeting.

The station owner’s original request for a Class B liquor license outlined the floor plan with a liquor cooler near the cashier counter and two locked shelves near the cooler. Class B allows for the sale of liquor in its original packaging for off-premises consumption, with sales terminating at 11 p.m. on weekdays, midnight on the weekends, and 2 a.m. on New Year’s Eve. The proposal was unanimously voted down Oct. 6.

At that time, the trustees agreed to draft a BW-1 license with different regulations for the board to reconsider.

The BW-1 license in the new request has all the same regulations as Class B, with the addition of restricting access to the liquor shelves after permitted hours of a sale ending at 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Every trustee voted no except for Jim Mitros, who said he could not find a good reason not to be in favor.

“We’ve got two gas stations within half a mile of each other; one of them has a liquor license,” Mitros said. “The other now that does not is asking just for the same treatment.”

Trustee Gary Daggett said the community is his boss, and based on feedback he received, the liquor license is something the community does not want.

Trustee George Lofton echoed Daggett and added that he would also see this as a test case for the other 20 gas stations in the area.
