A staff of 34 lifeguards and managers at Lions Club Pool were certified and earned a near perfect ranking for job performance this summer.
The lifeguards were at their posts from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the weekends, in addition to parties and special events in the evenings from June 1 through Aug. 9.
Three times the Lions Club Pool staff were given surprise inspections by StarGuard Elite, the park district’s certification company. The auditors observe lifeguard scanning techniques, run scenarios, check documents, observe the manager on duty and the physical facility.

Kayla Cook, recreation supervisor, said the lifeguard team receive three four-star audits, just below the highest score of five-star.
Lifeguard managers were:
Dylan Aver, Sanaa Henry, Matt Kneelan, Addison Sextonson and Sam Sextonson.
Members of the lifeguard team were:
Jordyn Abercrombie, Drew Bingham, Rocco Bonanotte, Daniele Brooms, Lyric Bryant, Gabby Carrillo, Chaunto Drape, Roxanne Duckett, Douwe Groen, Johnathan Jenkins, Cole Kennerly, Tristan Kennon, Aidan Kluak.
Luc Loudon, Anthony Mancha, Saada Marvel, Sophie McManus, Noah Norris, Kailah Oum, Dallas Prince, Jake Quirke, Max Quirke, Layla Rogan, Maddy Sampson, Wesley Schmidt, Lily Sherman, Samya Sissac, Kennedy Walker, Cyanna Wasniowski.
Recreation Supervisor Jenna Carlson ran three lifeguard certification courses in spring and summer to make certain all were properly certified. In preseason training, the Homewood Fire Department led the Emergency Action Plan practices with the lifeguards and staff.
“This was valuable to the lifeguards as they were able to see how fast it realistically takes EMS to arrive and take over,” Kayla Cook, recreation supervisor, said. “It gives a real example of how the paramedics will often allow lifeguards to continue care as they are brought up to speed on the situation. Practicing a realistic emergency plan offers the chances for all staff to know how they are integral during an emergency.”
