Tuesday, Oct. 28

Highlights:

  •  Consider an intergovernmental agreement creating the Southland Public Safety Communications Dispatch System, a new entity needed to own the consolidated E-Com/Southcom dispatch facility in Hazel Crest.  
  • Consider a contract with Burns & McDonnell to provide construction management services for the 2026 lead service line replacement project. 
  • Consider a measure to use Homewood’s share of the regional gaming tax from Wind Creek Southland Chicago casino to help fill a gap in police and fire pension funding.
  • Consider an ordinance authorizing the village to enter into a sales agreement with Munir Bawadi for 18155 Dixie Highway, formerly Delanoe’s Pizza. 
  • Consider a budget amendment to provide non-TIF incentive funds to Larry Kane of Jonathan Kane Salon and Spa for building improvements at 18065 Harwood Ave.
  • Consider a budget amendment to conduct emergency repairs to Sanitary Lift Station No. 9.

Walt’s transition to Berkot’s. Walt’s Food Center, 2345 W. 183rd St. in Homewood, will be closed Monday, Oct. 27, while the store transitions to its new owner, Berkot’s Super Foods. The store will reopen as Berkot’s on Tuesday, Oct. 28.

Metra Route Change. On Sunday, Nov. 2, Metra Electric trains will terminate and originate from the 18th Street Station due to the South Shore expansion project. During this time, no service will be available at Museum Campus/11th Street and Van Buren Street stations. For ADA customers and customers who have difficulty using stairs, Pace Paratransit vehicles will shuttle riders via the McCormick Place busway between the Millennium and McCormick Place Stations. All other customers wishing to travel to Millennium Station must transfer to a shuttle bus at the 18th Street Station. If you need help or have questions, please see Metra personnel for assistance. Flossmoor Public Art Commission Installation. Supporters of public art help support the Flossmoor Public Art Commission by purchasing commemorative bricks. The village is preparing to place its next order of bricks for the downtown traffic circle and plans to install them by the end of November. Place a brick order here. Orders for the November installation are due by Thursday, Oct. 30. 

Flossmoor Streetscape Project Update. Last week, D Construction installed bollards, benches, bike racks and trash receptacles. In the coming week, pavement marking is expected to be done. There will be temporary parking restrictions throughout the area. Trees will be released from the nursery by IDOT then planted in the planters. Concrete sidewalks and curbs will be repaired, followed by site clean up.

Monday, Oct. 27

Prime Time Fitness with Gigi. Low-impact aerobics for beginners or mature exercisers starts at 10:30 a.m. at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club, 2920 W. 183rd St. in Homewood.

Night of the Living B-Rated Horror Film.
 Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host showings of some bad horror movies from 6 to 8 p.m. Feel free to bring blankets and pillows. Snacks and drinks will be provided. 

Tuesday, Oct. 28

Haunted Ho-Flo Ride. Go on a tour of home and yard decorations in the community by bike. The ride will go from 6:30 to about 8 p.m. for 6 to 7 miles. Meet at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. A $5 per person donation will go to Homewood’s Cancer Support Center (bring cash or donate on-line).  There will be costume awards in adult and kid categories. Helmets required.

Family Pumpkin Carving & Jack-O-Lantern Jubilee. Carve pumpkins from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Irwin Community Center band shell, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood. Each registered participant gets one pumpkin, all carving and decorating materials, and a photo-op with the collective pumpkins. Take your pumpkin home after the event. Fee is $10 for H-F Park District residents, $15 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Learn to Ice Skate. Introductory lessons for kids age 2 and up will continue on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays until Dec. 20. Sessions will be held at the H-F Ice Arena, 777 Kedzie Ave. The primary focus will be to familiarize them with the ice, the rink, skates and developing fundamental skating skills. The fee for kids age 2 and 3 is $70 for H-F Park District residents, $80 for non-residents. The fee for kids age 4 and up is $74 for district residents, $84 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Myths and Magic Book Club. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a discussion from 6 to 8 p.m. of “Servants of Earth” by Sarah Hawley. Books will be available for checkout at circulation services.

Wednesday, Oct. 29

Manga Club for Teens. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the FORT for teens who love manga.

Hocus Pocus Interactive Movie. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a screening of “Hocus Pocus” (1993) with an interactive movie script. Includes props, singing, and more. Registration required, due to supplies. Register here.

Thursday, Oct. 30

Resurrection Mary. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host an opportunity to learn about Chicago’s most beloved spirit from 7 to 8 p.m. Who is or was “Resurrection Mary” and what makes the Chicago version of this “Vanishing Hitchhiker” legend so special? Where did the story start? What are the facts? Are people still seeing Mary’s ghost today?

Indoor S’mores and Scares. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a showing of “Are You Afraid of the Dark” along with snacks and spooky stories. Registration is encouraged but not required.

Thornton Township Trunk or Treat. Local organizations are invited to decorate a trunk, wear costumes and help create a fun event for area kids. The event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, at Thornton Township Hall, 333 E. 162nd St., South Holland. Friday, Oct. 31

Village of Homewood Trick or Treat. Homewood staff will be handing out full-sized candy bars to trick-or-treaters who stop by village hall, the police department, the fire department or the Homewood Science Center from 3 to 5 p.m.

Trick or Treat. Hours for trick or treat in the neighborhoods of Homewood and Flossmoor are from 3 to 7 p.m. in both villages.

Saturday, Nov. 1

Pumpkin Smash. Keep your jack o’ lanterns out of the landfill by bringing them to the annual pumpkin smash event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Coyote Run Golf Course, 800 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor.

Halloween Bash. Not My Dad will perform starting at 7 p.m. at Tuscan Gardens, 601 W. Holbrook Road in Glenwood. Costumes encouraged but not required. Contest for best outfit.

Learn to Curl. H-F Park District will host a class for beginners and those looking to refine their curling skills from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at H-F Ice Arena, 777 Kedzie Ave. The 2-week class will continue on Saturday, Nov. 8. This program will introduce participants to the foundational rules, techniques and gameplay of curling in a supportive and fun environment. For ages 15 and up. STEM Saturday. Science play and learning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.

Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St., at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.

Selective Mutism Documentary Screening. H-F Science Pub will host special screening of the documentary “Selective Mutism – Getting The Word Out” at 7 p.m. in the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. The film, directed by Eve Keepings de Jesus, raises awareness about selective mutism, a complex anxiety disorder that affects a person’s ability to speak in certain social situations. Tuesday, Nov. 11

Books Without Borders. The next book discussion will take place from 6:45 to 8 p.m. at Beyond Borders Café, 1036 Sterling Ave. in Flossmoor. The book is “Stamped – Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. It will be available at the Rock Shop, 18109 Dixie Highway in Homewood, and at www.bookshop.org. Everyone is welcome.

Sunday, Nov. 16

Open House at H-F Racquet & Fitness Club. H-F Park District will host an open house from noon to 4 p.m. at the club, 2920 W. 183rd St. in Homewood, to give visitors a chance to see new fitness equipment that recently was installed.

Sunday, Nov. 23

Butterball Burner 5K Fun Run. The annual run will begin at 8 a.m. at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, 2920 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. All ages and abilities welcome. The untimed event is great for family and friends wanting to burn off some calories before the Thanksgiving feast. Sign-up by Oct. 31 to guarantee a commemorative long-sleeve T-shirt. Fee is $30 until Nov. 18, then $35. Click here to register.
