Volunteers collecting items for Manteno Veterans Home

In honor of Veterans Day, volunteers have designated Saturday, Nov. 8, as collection day at St. John Neumann Church in Homewood in conjunction with American Legion Post 1139 in East Hazel Crest.

Between 9 a.m. and noon, donations will be accepted at the church parking lot, 17951 Dixie Highway. Volunteers will be collecting the items that will be delivered to the Veterans Home in Manteno. 

This drive is “how we can help honor those true American heroes on Veterans Day,” said John Kearns, Post 1139 commander.

Government regulations restrict donations to new items.

The greatest needs are men’s sweatpants sizes L, XL, 4XL, and various sizes of dress shirts with neckties, men’s and women’s bathrobes, men’s and women’s pajamas; winter coats sizes 3X and 4X; and winter hats, scarves, gloves and mittens.

Personal care items, such as electric razors and men’s body spray, such as Axe; men’s and women’s sunglasses.

Also, paper towels, napkins, disposable heavy duty plates and bowls and Forever postage stamps.

Requested food items include miniature candy bars, individual bags of chips; regular and sugar-free Gatorade, diet and regular cans of soda varieties and root beer; individually wrapped snack cakes; individually wrapped mini-donut packs.

Cash donations will also be accepted, or checks can be mailed to American Legion Post 1139, PO Box 1256, Homewood, IL 60430.
