Filmmaker John Waters will share his movie tales at GSU on Oct. 31

Filmmaker and actor John Waters will welcome guests to The Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University on Oct. 31, as he shares his secrets at a director’s commentary and screening of his 1994 film “Serial Mom.”

The program will begin at 8 p.m. Waters will share behind the scenes stories for this cult film, real life inspirations and unfiltered observations along the way.

Movie enthusiasts will recognize Waters as the filmmaker of such hits as “Hairspray,” his 1988 production that went on to be recreated as a musical Broadway hit. Other movies in his film repertoire are the 1981 hit “Polyester,” “Pecker” from 1998 and the 2004 smash “A Dirty Shame.”

“Serial Mom” has been described as a satirical black comedy crime film depicting America’s obsession with true crime and celebrity. Kathleen Turner stars as Beverly Sutphin who lives a charmed life. But, when one of her son’s teachers speaks disparagingly of the boy at a parent-teacher conference, she runs the instructor over in the school parking lot. Suddenly she has an insatiable taste for murder. Six homicides later, the cops get wise to her crimes.

Tickets are available through CenterTickets.net or by calling the box office at 708-235-2222. The Center for Performing Arts is at 1 University Parkway in University Park.
