Metra Electric Service Disruption. Metra Electric Line trains will originate and terminate at Matteson Station this morning due to continuing power problems affecting the line between Richton Park and University Park stations. Riders should also expect that some trains will be annulled during the morning rush service and should consult the service alerts at metra.com for details. Metra and Com Ed forces continue to work to restore power to a substation at University Park that supplies power to the trains, yards and stations.
Homewood Block Party. The last community block party of the year will be from 6 to 10 p.m. on Martin Square between Chestnut and Ridge Roads. Enjoy a summer night in downtown Homewood with great music, local eateries and artisans with unique goods.
District 161 Back-To-School Bash. Head to Flossmoor Park from 4 to 6 p.m. for a back to school celebration. Connect with local resources that support students and community. Kids and adults alike will enjoy treats from Kona Ice and Dip ‘n Double, while exploring a variety of tables hosted by local organizations. Community partners such as Partnership for Resilience, Elevate Therapy, and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) will be on hand to share information and answer questions. One of the highlights of the event is the return of the popular Spirit Wear Swap. The Flossmoor Library and Flossmoor Green Commission have partnered once again to collect gently used District 161 spirit wear. The Bash is sponsored by the Village of Flossmoor, the Flossmoor Public Library and Flossmoor School District 161.
Saturday, Aug. 30
Homewood Outdoor Farmers Market. The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Martin Square on Martin Avenue between Chestnut and Ridge Roads in downtown Homewood. Vendors will offer fresh produce, baked goods, handcrafted jewelry, skincare and more. Food trucks will be on hand and ready-to-eat meals will be available.
STEM Saturday. Science play and learning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.
Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.
Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St., at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.
