Flossmoor Chief of Police Carl Estelle announced a strategic realignment in leadership for the Flossmoor Police Department with the appointment of a new deputy chief of police.
“During the past several months, initially as the director of police services then as the chief of police, I have had the opportunity to closely examine the functions, operations and personnel of the Flossmoor Police Department, knowing that one of the most critical components of ensuring the success of the department is securing the right command staff,” Estelle said.
After an application and interview process held for interested internal staff this spring, Estelle has named Flossmoor Sgt. Douglas Merkle to the position of deputy chief of police, effective July 2.
Merkle was promoted to the role of Flossmoor patrol sergeant in 2023, after serving as a full-time officer since 2010. His interest in law enforcement and commitment to community policing were sparked during his college internship with Flossmoor in 2008.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement and justice administration from Western Illinois University. More recently, he completed the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety earlier this year.
In addition to his local responsibilities, Merkle has been an active member of the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System Mobile Field Force Mutual Aid Team for the past 12 years, where he currently serves as a squad leader. This role has provided him with valuable regional experience in coordinated emergency response and inter-agency operations.
“Deputy Chief Merkle brings a wealth of experience and a forward-thinking approach to public safety,” Estelle said. “His appointment reflects our commitment to building a leadership team that can effectively guide the department through a period of renewal and progress.”
In Flossmoor, the deputy chief acts as second-in-command for the department, assisting the chief in managing and overseeing all aspects of department operations.
Merkle will be ceremonially sworn in by the Village of Flossmoor Board of Trustees at its regular meeting on Monday, July 21.
