Green Thumb Saturday at 9:30 a.m. on June 14 will feature a look at the local oak tree ecosystems in Homewood, which are among the few left in the region.
Ryan Sweeney, Chicago Region Trees Initiative community specialist from The Morton Arboretum, will be the presenter in the board room at village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.

Sweeney will share information about the importance of oak trees to the local ecosystem and talk about the trees initiative’s efforts in the South Suburbs, with mapping and canopy data specific to Homewood. Some oak trees in the village date back to precolonial times.
The meeting will include guidance about specific actions residents can take to support oaks and other trees in the community.
Green Thumb Saturdays is an educational workshop on gardening and environmental topics held on the second Saturday of every month from April through October. The events are co-sponsored by the Illinois Extension Master Gardeners and the Village of Homewood Tree Committee.
