H-F High staff discovered racial slur, threat in girls bathroom

Administrators at Homewood-Flossmoor High School notified parents Tuesday, April 29, that it was working to find the culprit who wrote a racially insensitive and threatening message in a girls bathroom at the school.

According to an email sent to parents, the writing was discovered by a staff member sometime in the morning. The bathroom was closed to students and Flossmoor police were notified. The email said staff immediately took procedures to make sure certain students were safe and that there was no active threat to the school or students.

The following day, a second email was sent to parents through the parent communication portal explaining that staff was going through surveillance footage. Security staff “was placed on high alert and remains vigilant” as the school staff works with the Flossmoor Police Department. Police would be on special alert at schools in Flossmoor.

“We are grateful for the swift response of our staff, security and local law enforcement. Our priority remains creating a safe and respectful environment for every student,” the email said.

Flossmoor Police said Thursday afternoon there was no new information available on the incident. Officers were aware that H-F staff were reviewing video and had not been given any additional information.

The Chronicle requested an update from high school staff on Thursday, but did not receive a response.
