Youth Baseball and Softball Opening Day. Flossmoor Baseball and Softball will hold its opening day parade starting at 9:30 a.m. from the Parker Junior High Parking Lot to Flossmoor Park ball fields. Opening day festivities will start after teams arrive at the fields. Homewood Baseball and Softball has not posted a starting time for the parade, but it traditionally begins at 11 a.m. at Irwin Park in the 1800 block of Ridge Road and ends at the ball fields near Izaak Walton Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road. Festivities begin following the parade.
Soaring Strings. The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra’s 47th anniversary gala will be held at Olympia Fields Country Club, 2800 Country Club Drive. The event will feature the CoverGirls Violin Show. Cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. Music and dancing until 10:30 p.m. Tickets are available here.
Sensory STEM Saturday. The Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, offers this low sensory STEM time from 9 to 10 a.m. for families with children who would benefit from a more relaxed atmosphere. The reduced levels of noise and stimulation can help children feel more at ease, allowing them to explore activities and exhibits at their own pace. Registration required.
STEM Saturday. Science learning play from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.
Skin Cancer Awareness and Treatments. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host Advocate Aurora Health representatives who will talk about skin cancer from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The presentation will cover causes and treatments and is open to all ages.
Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.
Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.
