Hidden Gem Guitars, 2630 Flossmoor Road, is amping up Earth Month with a Recycle and Restring event on Saturday, April 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. Local guitarists are invited to bring any brand of old instrument strings for recycling and enjoy a complimentary restringing of their electric or acoustic guitars
The free event is sponsored by D’Addario® strings and TerraCycle® to celebrate both sustainability and music by giving musicians the chance to refresh their sound while reducing waste.
Strings collected will be recycled through Playback, D’Addario’s innovative string recycling program, which has already recycled over 15 million strings since its launch in 2016. Metal strings are refined into new alloys, while nylon strings are repurposed for industrial plastic applications.
“Celebrating our two-year anniversary with a D’Addario Restring and Recycle event is the perfect way to give back to our community,” said Kyle Asche, owner of Hidden Gem Guitars. “As a shop built by guitar enthusiasts for guitar enthusiasts, we’re passionate about helping musicians maintain their instruments while also reducing waste. This event gives players the chance to learn proper restringing techniques, pick up free D’Addario strings and swag, and be part of a movement to recycle old strings instead of tossing them. We look forward to celebrating with everyone in Flossmoor on April 5.”
Playback is the world’s first instrument string recycling program, created through a partnership between D’Addario and TerraCycle, a global leader in developing recycling solutions for typically hard-to-recycle materials. The program is also part of D’Addario’s Players Circle loyalty program, allowing registered users to recycle strings in exchange for extra Players Circle points.
Musicians attending the event will receive a special code redeemable for extra points, which can be used toward merchandise or donated to the D’Addario Foundation, a nonprofit supporting music education in underserved communities.
