H-F students garner state speech competition honors

Five Homewood-Flossmoor High School students brought home honors and the H-F speech team placed eighth at the IHSA speech competition Feb. 21 and 22 in Peoria.

Stella Hoyt took third place honors in dramatic interpretation. The senior has competed for H-F all four years. Twice Hoyt was named state champion in dramatic interpretation. She also has competed in dramatic duet acting, and prose reading.

State winners were:

3rd Place – Stella Hoyt, dramatic interpretation.

4th Place – Robert Wakefield II, humorous interpretation.

6th Place – Laila Dyer, informative speaking.

6th Place – Laila Dyer, special occasion speaking.

13th Place – Malcolm Rush, impromptu speaking.

14th Place – Malcolm Rush, extemporaneous speaking.

H-F students advanced to state after winning the regional championship title and second place in the sectionals competition. H-F was one of 73 teams competing at the state level.

Teacher Prince Lowe is head coach. Assistant coaches are  Kanoa Mulling, Kona Burks, Aundria LaNier, Rita Wicks, Angela Rich, Zoe Bridges, Nia DeRamus, Jocelyn Billheimer, Dairyon Bolden and Jo Schaffer.
