The third, fourth and fifth graders at Churchill School in Homewood showed off their knowledge of Black living legends at an open house Feb. 27.

There was face painting, popcorn and other treats for sale, musical selections performed by James Hart School’s sixth grade choir under the direction of Heather Olsen; a mini drumming clinic led by fourth grade teacher Jonathan Pettis; spoken word presentations by Caleb Bowie, Lily LaPlante and Christian Bowie; and a variety of displays created by the students.

The list included activist Claudette Colvin who was part of the Montgomery bus boycott; ballet dancer Misty Copeland; gymnasts Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles, and entertainers Beyonce, Rihanna, Cynthia Erivo, Halley Bailey and Dwayne Johnson, to name a few.
