The Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education welcomed students who participated in the district’s spelling bee to their Feb. 24 meeting. Students from all district schools worked to memorize a list of words before competing in the bee at Parker on Jan. 30.
“It was a wonderful evening,” said Director of Learning and Instruction Amabel Crawford. “Our students did a great job, there are lots of nerves before we begin, but they really come out and shine.”
This year’s winner was Benjamin Wool, an eighth-grade student at Parker. He correctly spelled the word “incessant” to win the district spelling bee. Wool did not attend the Feb. 24 board meeting.
Wool is eligible to attend the South Cook Spelling Bee at Southland College Prep in Richton Park on March 4, 2025. The top three spellers at that competition will advance to the 15th Regional ISC Scripps Spelling Bee Championship in Broadview on March 20. The final competition will be the week of Memorial Day in Maryland.
2025 marks the 100th year of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
